Jumble House

The Story

A handsome young man dressed in Air Force uniform climbed down from the Spitfire he had just been inspecting. Later that evening, he ventured out with friends to a bar in Castiglione del Lago. Many years later, that same man drove his wife and daughter from Lancashire to experience the “green heart of Italy” that had captured his heart during the tumultuous years of the war. They arrived at a campsite by Lago Trasimeno. The only non-Italian family there that Ferragosto weekend.  The daughter fell in love with Umbria, with Trasimeno—a love that mirrored her father’s. Each morning, after a cornetto and cappuccino at the Extra Bar, the family  explored the many beautiful towns and villages around the lake.  Their afternoons were spent driving to the cooler pinewoods of Castel Rigone to escape the intense August heat.  The years passed, yet the magic of those summer days never faded. The daughter held Trasimeno close to her heart, vowing that one day she would return and make it her home. Time marched on, as marriage, career, and family responsibilities delayed her dream. But as retirement approached, the daughter, now a wife and mother, finally saw a glimpse of that dream becoming reality. They explored numerous properties around Castiglione yet none seemed to fit. Then one day, her husband stumbled upon a tiny, charming house for sale overlooking Lake Trasimeno. Old and quaint, with charming steps leading to the door, he fell in love with it at first sight.  Later, he drove his wife along the breathtaking, winding road from Passignano to Castel Rigone. For her, the view was achingly familiar and deeply ingrained in memory. As they passed the pinewoods, she drew a sharp breath, realizing this was the very place her father had brought them all those years ago. The little house on Via del Santuario felt perfect, as if fate had orchestrated this meeting for them.  Originally intended as a *casa vacanza*—a holiday home—it quickly transformed into a sanctuary that felt like it had always been theirs.  To the daughter, it was not just a dream realized; it was a place that connected her to her father, a home he would have chosen had he not died so prematurely. The house wove its magic seamlessly through the years.  The house shared in the joy of the first grandchild and was the inspiration for the many toys crafted from cast-off clothes, or ‘jumble’ breathing life into characters that sprang from the pages of the many stories she wrote and videos she produced as her family expanded. Before long, the little house overflowed with these whimsical creations, spilling onto the steps in a joyful display. Dazzling silver Christmas decorations morphed into playful Easter rabbits and mischievous Halloween witches and ghouls. Even as her own grandchildren outgrew this delightful revelry, the festive displays continued to captivate local children and neighbors and visitors, ensuring that the spirit of joy and creativity woven into the fabric of that little house endured for generations to come. The daughter reflected fondly on her father’s influence and the legacy they were creating in this beautiful part of Italy. She often took long walks through the pinewoods, finding solace and inspiration in the very landscape that had once enchanted him.  Each step through the fragrant forest reminded her of the rich tapestry of memories woven into every corner of their home—it was as if he walked beside her, guiding her and his grandchildren.

Creativity

I can’t imagine life without  creativity. I love experimenting with different styles and mediums and there is an element of fun in all of my art.

Art is a powerful medium for expressing emotions. A sculpture or painting can convey emotions and thoughts that words often cannot capture.

I hope you will enjoy my website and be encouraged to inspire others to harness the transformative power of art as a tool to calm the mind and foster inner peace.  I hope that you will enjoy my website and will try some  of my ideas.

Why ‘Jumble House’?

Many years ago, on a quest to craft a storybook filled with vibrant characters for our Granddaughter, I stumbled upon a pair of forgotten tights. It was this serendipitous discovery that sparked the birth of the beloved 'Jumbles' toys. Each character intricately crafted from a blend of imagination and resourcefulness, demonstrating how inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places!

The stories became books then, as our own family grew so did the family of Jumbles. From the introduction of my first ‘Jumble’ Maisie, arrived Georgie, and Alfie and Mr. Frog. All crafted from discarded tights or, as we used to call it, ‘Jumble’ .  So the toys became known as ‘Jumbles’ and our house, ‘Jumble House’.

Touchy Feely !

Texture!

Texture is SO important to me.  I lost my sight for a few years as a child and my sense of touch remains very sensitive.  I enjoy drawing and painting but gain much more satisfaction when I can add texture. I like to ‘see’ with my hands.
