My Father. My inspiration.
Inspiration & Beyond
Ever since I can remember I have been interested in art and craft, always scribbling and cutting and pasting!
My inspiration came from my father who could turn his hand to anything and everything. He was equally at home mending the car and inventing a garden hydration system to constructing amazingly delicate paper sculptures.
I remember watching him create a wonderful marquetry scene of the Amalfi coast from a photo taken during his time there during World War Two. We flew his little aeroplanes made from balsa wood with rubber band engines and my electric train ran along rails flanked with hillsides made from sawdust, decorated with tiny balsa wood house houses which twinkled in the dark.
He was a teacher and a photographer with a great sense of humour. In the days before Photoshop and PhotoRoom he produced his own brand of trick shots. I remember one of me sat in a plant pot between ‘Bill and Ben’.
I think I have inherited his sense of artistic fun. Most of my sculptured subjects contain an element of humour and even the hair of people in my portraits can be more plant than human!
For me art is more than a hobby. It is a necessary part of my life. It is my means of expression and also a way of coping with the stresses of life. I also see it as a continual learning process . There is always a new medium or new technique to try.
My blog covers a wide range of topics, and in each post I try to share my knowledge through storytelling and visuals. For me, knowing that there are people who are as passionate about my interests as I am means everything, and it’s exciting to see my followers grow.
