Sometimes, letting your creativity flow in a spontaneous and random way can lead to unexpected and exciting outcomes!
Such was the case with this project.
These sculptures were the result of a completely random method of working. I had no plan or even ideas in my head before starting. I was feeling a bit bored and frustrated about how long some work was taking and so knew I needed to make something. It always helps!
I delved into my ‘Jumble Box’ ( I’m sure just EVERYONE has one! ) and pulled out a selection of objects that otherwise would have been thrown away.
I knew I needed a head body, arms and legs but was still not sure how the person or creature would turn out.
The Polystyrene balls I used for the heads had previously been used for other models.
Cardboard tubes from the inside of clingfilm rolls were used for the neck and arms of one sculpture. Plastic tubing for the legs.and arms of the other.. The bodies were made from empty Illy coffee tins.
I started to piece everything together, experimenting with different positions and arrangements until I found a composition that I liked.
I used aluminium foil to form the features on the face and to round off the body. Then papier-mâché to cover and connect all the different elements, adding texture and strength to the sculptures. I finished off with a layer of white tissues.
Once dried, I painted the sculptures in bright, bold colors to bring them to life.
What are they? Your guess is as good as mine. But of this I’m sure. They have ATTITUDE!!!
