Why I love coloured pencil drawing and why you should try it.

Yesterday was one of those grey, dreary, wet Mondays and I I really needed some sunshine!

So out came my coloured pencils. I chose a selection of sunny yellows and oranges and ochres and started to draw.

Why paper and pencils?

First of all I love layering the colours and watching them 'pop' when that final layer (this time yellow) is applied.

Yesterday there was also a practical reason. I was baking. I needed to work in the kitchen and a project that could cope with interruptions . Lots of interruptions ! Drawings are quite happy when left for a while unlike paint and clay.

My materials:

Coloured Pencils.

For me, the most important characteristic of coloured pencils is their blendability. The colours must mix. They need to be soft not hard.

I like these Derwent pencils and also the Fabre-Castel.

These blend really well and are super soft.

bold, dramatic colours then these Dewent Academy are perfect.

Of course, one accumulates pencils from different sets and there's no rule that says you can't mix them.

The paper:

I use this paper for most of my drawings. It's heavy and smooth. Textured is ok depending on the effect you want to achieve.
