Minimalistic

I've just embarked on a new collection of coffee paintings I'm

calling 'minimalistic'. It is in a very different style from all my other work and I'm finding it very refreshing although quite a challenge !

I have been using coffee as a painting medium for a few years now. I love the richness of the tones but also the unpredictability of the coffee itself!

There is something refreshing and exciting about a medium whose results are not revealed until completely dry.

I paint on canvas. On watercolour paper and on ceramics. The process if different every time.

The first collection I made was a set of portraits on canvas treated with Gesso. Gesso enables an element of control which was necessary in the context of a portrait although I allowed the background to express itself.

The painting below of Minty our pet Royal Python, again, required the control provided by Gesso.

When painting on plates it is virtually impossible to control the coffee unless you maintain it at just the right consistency . Something which needs to be learnt by trial and error!
